Jump the Cracks
Thing 1:
I enjoyed the awards announcements yesterday. I love seeing Neil Gaiman and especially Terry Pratchett recognized for their work for kids. (They collaborated on a book once. It was lots of fun!)

Thing 1a:
The Caldecott winner, The House in the Night, is a book I'd never heard of before yesterday. (I blame my teenaged children who will not sit still for picture books any more.) It's a very beautiful book. My friend, author Susan Bivin Aller, noted how it's very similar in style to the classic picture books by Wanda Ga'g:

from Millions of Cats from Millions of Cats

Very cool.

Thing 1b:
I have never heard of any of this year's Alex Award books. What does this say about my reading habits? Not sure, but it might have something to do with that "only 24 hours in a day" rumor.

Thing 2:
Publisher's Weekly laid off Sara Nelson this week.
I have heard Sara Nelson speak, and all I can think of is "What idiots at PW." She is smart and savvy and witty and who would NOT want her on their team? And it makes me wonder about lots of other layoffs in publishing lately. These companies are cutting off their nose to spite their face. It's not good. It's short-sighted and foolish and I know times are hard, but there must be other options they can try first before they fly into these panics.

Thing 3: On the bright side, there are smart publishers out there who will be snapping up some great talent.
